Best Curbing Sealer

BEFORE..,

BEFORE..,

We have all witnessed the damage the time and environment can put on concrete. Quite often one of the most important steps, curing and sealing, is overlooked in the project.  However, you as the homeowner, have options.  You simply need to visit your local hardware store and ask the question.  I’m sure that they’ll tell you about the best concrete sealer that they have in stock. I call these “over-the-counter” sealants, but in the long run, you will need to reapply them at least twice a year.  Does this really save you money?

Over the past 18+ years, we’ve tried many products, but what we found to be the best sealant for our concrete landscaping borders comes straight from the commercial end of the industry – Lambert UV Super Seal.  You can’t get this at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s, we purchase it in 5 gallon containers directly from the manufacturer.

UV Protection

UV Protection

These products are applied at specific timing after the  concrete has been placed (usually within 24 hours, but not immediately) and form a resin-layer that both, helps curing with the prevention of too much water loss and creates a film that leaves the project more durable and protects the beauty of the surface.

We’ve seen many of our competitors apply sealer immediately, as well as water-down their over-the-counter sealants so they can push it through their store-bought sprayers.  But Curb Appeal Concrete Borders has invested money into commercial sprayers so that the product does not need to be watered down, it is sprayed directly on your finished product – usually within 24 hours of installation.  You get your money’s worth with us.

Florida weather has a brutal effect on everything – including the concrete product.  Without proper care, you will see mold, mildew and even tannin or rust water stains all over unprotected borders.  By applying a proper sealant, your borders could last for years without the need for cleaning.

We have found this particular product to be the best in protection for your borders – keeping the elements from permanently attaching to your curbing.  Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders will be happy to treat our newly installed borders with a protective barrier to keep your product looking great for years! Want to Gain Control of your Lawn?

I must admit that this season has been incredibly busy!  So I’m just checking in to show you some photographs of our latest work this past week.    For the job on the left, we were hired on by a Master Builder for a project in the Dr. Phillips area.  It was a large job, so we had to prove that we had insurance and workers’ comp for them – no problem!  Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders has been established since 1998, completely insured!

Kilgore Pavers

We showed up on time and completed the job as agreed.  I do want to point out that the pavers were installed by another company, but just look at that straight line!  Isn’t that great!  The homeowners were extremely happy, so we were too!

Another photo from a job a few days prior that I wanted to show you was on a sidewalk.   Simply artistic and beautiful, as well as manageable for lawn mowers.  It keeps the mulch in, and the grass out!  This particular design, I believe, enhances to landscaping and “frames” everything beautifully!

How Much Does Curbing Cost?

One of the first questions that people ask is; “how much do you charge per foot?”  Well, the answer to that question is normally, “Do you know how much footage you have?”

Even though most curbing companies will come out and give you a free estimate, you still should know an approximate footage that you have before you call, so you can tell if you’ve received a good price.

But how do I do that?

HoseGo get your garden hose.  Your average garden hose at home is usually 25 feet.  Lay it out in the design of your garden bed or in a circle around that tree.  How many times did you have to move it?  Two?  Three?  Well, that tells you approximately how many linear feet you have – more than you thought, huh?  Curbing companies go by the “Linear Foot,” which means that your otherwise straight line – may “curve.”

Most companies work with a minimum, which means that they have to charge you a certain amount – even if you have 25 linear feet, or a thousand; we all must work with a minimum.  Every time they move that trailer or get a crew, it will cost them a certain amount of money.

So, on average (in Central Florida), most companies have a minimum dollar amount to even show up at your house with crew and trailer – let’s say, $450.00 for the sake of this post.  That will get you UP TO their minimum footage (usually 75-100 feet) of curbing.  Anything over that will probably be charged by the linear foot.  However, as I mentioned before, estimates are usually free, so take advantage of a professional in your area.

Now, understand that  all companies are not alike, and prices/minimums may differ.  This is just a “guide” to help you understand the “ball-park” figure, and to know what to expect when hiring a curbing contractor.

It’s better to work with a contractor who has a solid history in Concrete Landscaping Borders.  As in all trades, there is a knowledge and experience necessary to make your curb installation right.  And, our curbing is 4″ x 6″, which is a lot more stable/sturdy that some others out there.  This is a diagram of the most popular “Mower Style” that we offer. It is 4″ x 6″.Mower Style

I also want you to keep in mind that the company has to purchase equipment, tools, trailers, trucks, fuel, uniforms, insurance, concrete, dyes, fiber, employee’s, taxes and so forth.  This is another reason that you should only hire someone who is established in your area.  We can handle the overhead, and do not ask for money in advance (or at least we don’t).  And, we can take all major credit cards, so if you’d like this option, please let us know!

Ask them how long they have been doing business here in Central Florida. Can they show you their actual work, or refer you to another homeowner close by so you can see yourselves?  You want to make sure that you can get help to replace or repair if you need it.   You can’t do that if your selected less experienced contractor is out of business.

10 Money-Saving Tips for Landscaping

10 Money-Saving Tips for Landscaping

Landscaping_Tips_Full_Size

A yard with a beautiful landscape is one of the few home investments with a value that increases over the years. Buyers love mature plants and trees, so giving your yard some love even if you’re not planning on selling for a few years is a smart way to go. What’s even smarter? Employing these money-saving tips:

1. Free mulch.
Many municipalities recycle the yard waste they pick up curbside throughout the year into mulch, which is then made available to residents for free or a very low price. Surrounding your shrubs and trees with a layer of the stuff not only makes them stand out visually, it also helps conserve moisture and stave off bugs.

2. Don’t Buy Screens.

Instead of buying the weed screening to keep weeds from growing, try newspapers under the mulch.  It will last two years, and then it will be time to replace the mulch anyway!

3. Look to the list.
Craigslist’s “farm and garden” section can be a treasure trove of outdoor planters, border stones and even “used” trees and shrubs. Check here first before heading to the nursery.

4. Go big with your neighbors.
Bedding plants are often less expensive when you buy them in bulk.

5. Compost.
Instead of buying bags of fertilizer, generate your own black gold for gardens by composting your kitchen waste. It’s not as hard – or smelly – as you’d think.

6. Chat with a master.
Master gardeners often hold free Q&A sessions at garden centers or local libraries. Before investing in new plants, seeds or shrubs, check with an expert to find which options will thrive without expensive maintenance.

7. Rein it in.
Trim back any trees, shrubs or vines that hide or overwhelm your windows, porch or patio. Sometimes the most effective landscaping upgrade can come from removing greenery, not adding it.

8. Pull your weeds.
It’s the outdoor equivalent of de-cluttering your home, an inexpensive way to boost your yard’s visual appeal.

9. Powerwash fences and patios.
It can take years off your fence and patio in just minutes. You’ll be amazed at how much brighter they’ll look with just a bit of effort that requires little more skill than running a vacuum. Rent a machine at your local home improvement box store for about $30.

10. Add Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders.

By framing your landscaping, not only will it add “curb appeal” to your home, but it will keep mulch in, and grass out – making it easier to mow, mulch, and edge.

What’s In Your Yard?

VJ 5The owner already had the pavers, but he called us in to “finish” the look.  Doesn’t it look great?

We completed several hundred feet so far.  Due to this time of year where afternoon thundershowers hit, we started doing ground prep on Thursday, followed up with curb installation on Friday.  Unfortunately, the Friday storms ruined about 7 feet at the end of the run, but because THIS IS OUR PRIMARY BUSINESS, we went back on Saturday, cut out the damaged parts, and replaced them (at no additional fee for the homeowner).  The homeowners were very impressed.  We back our work and guarantee our workmanship (certain conditions apply).

VJ 8Matter of fact, one of his next-door neighbors tried to get the similar job done by a “new” company in the area to save a few bucks; and to be quite frank, they did not install a nice job.  Even though I always hope that Scott gets additional photographs so that I can share the difference of “bad” borders versus “great borders”, it can always get a little tricky.

Many of the other companies in our area have other full-time jobs, and do this after hours to make a few extra bucks.  Not Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders.  We are full time, and customer satisfaction  is our #1 priority.  We try to keep our overhead low to pass on savings, and don’t spend a lot of money on advertising, so it is very important that our clients are happy with our work.  That’s how we earn most of our business! Word of Mouth.., and what I post here.

You can always take a look at our website to view information so as good borders, bad borders, what to expect, what’s available, and what to look for.  We also give you ball park estimates so you can figure out if Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders is right for your yard, and how to measure the linear footage with a simply garden hose.  We’re not going to steer you wrong.  If you want “stamping” (pattern on curb), keep going.  We don’t do that, and we explain why on our site.

However, as a homeowner, we believe that you deserve the know and understand what you’re buying.  Please use our site to educate yourself, and decide if Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders is right for you!  Call us today for YOUR free estimate!

It Looks Like Rain

Now that the torrential summer downpours are here, are you noticing that your mulch is floating out of your flower beds into your lawn?  Perhaps the mulch is spilling over onto your sidewalks making it more dangerous when you walk outside?

You should consider getting Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders.  Not only will you “frame” your landscaping, but it will keep your family safer, and your lawn more appealing.  Our borders are designed with the homeowner in mind.  Our mower style makes it simple to ride the wheels directly upon the edge, reducing “edging” time.

No EdgingThe picture to the right here shoes no border whatsoever.  Grass can grow straight in, and the mulch can flow right out into your lawn.

No Edging woodBut, I can’t leave out the trusted ole wooden ties that are sometimes used.  See the difference?

Curbing – Top 3 Things to Look For

Today, we were replacing curbs from some ‘other’ curbing company in St. Cloud.  The unfortunate thing about it was that the owners didn’t know what to look for when it came to curbing.  And, the ‘other’ company obviously installed their curbs before a rain-storm hit, so the curbing was badly pitted.  They should have covered the curbs if a storm were pending, not just leave the job site.

However, the damaged and crumbled curbs were picked up by  Curb Appeal Concrete Landscaping Borders and transported quickly to the landfill!  After-which, new borders were installed – with color!   I should have the complete pictures for this job tomorrow, which I will share with you.

Curb 17 - NOT Curb Appeal

Anyway, what I’m boiling down to is; do you know what to look for?  Here is an example of what you definitely DON’T want with your borders.

This picture was actually taken in 2003 by someone that hired us.  For the record, these are NOT our borders. Notice how uneven and wavy the top is?  This is just “crap installation” here.  Can you see the difference?

curb1

In this second picture, you see straight lines that are easy to mow around.  For the record, these ARE our borders.

You want your borders to “frame” and complement your landscape – not distract from it.  You don’t want “roller-coaster’ curbs – you want straight, smooth and level curbing.  THAT’s how you frame your landscaping.

And, a big plus (know that the rainy season is upon us); concrete landscaping borders keeps the mulch in – and the grass out!

So; when investigating this avenue for your landscaping; think about the following:

  1. How long have they been in business?
  2. Can they provide customer names for references?
  3. Guarantee’s?  Will they come back for repairs?

You wouldn’t believe how many companies fade in and fade out.  We can proudly say that we’ve been doing Concrete Landscaping Borders in this area for 18 years.  Shouldn’t you go with a successfully locally owned and operated company?  This is the only business we have – full time!  That’s us!

Homework:  You as a homeowner should do due diligence to determine if the company you select will be able to perform the job to your satisfaction; are able to complete repairs if needed; have a solid foundation of customer service; and a fair price.  Research this site to give you prices, curb styles, color options, and how to measure.

DOES LANDSCAPING INCREASE YOUR HOME’S VALUE?

Written by Andrea Davis on Monday, 13 October 2014 3:14 pm

After spending hundreds to thousands of dollars on landscaping, how do you know if you’ll recoup your investment? Homeowners may wonder if their efforts are worthwhile compared to interior projects. In actuality, landscaping comes back in resale value more than you may think.

According to a publication from Virginia Tech, a home landscape has been valued at around 15 percent of a home’s total value. Furthermore, certain landscape aspects add more to the home than others, including:

curb-appeal-2272x1704-add-curb-appeal-the-decorative-edge-moyuc.com

Design: 42%

Plant size: 36%

Diversity of plants: 22%

The study cited that a $150,000 home could go from $8,300 in worth to almost $19,000 more with the addition of a landscape.

That’s a lot for just adding a front yard to your home.

Here is more information about these elements and how to increase the value of your home.

Landscape Design

Photo courtesy of Jardin Passion Landscape ConHow you design the landscape is the first step in creating a beautiful and valuable front yard. If you plant shrubs, flowers and trees without a design in mind, you could run into maintenance issues down the road. This is why you might call in a landscape designer to help. Landscape designers have the knowledge when it comes to creating landscapes to match homes and climate conditions. They know which trees, shrubs and flowers mix versus which ones might be troublesome. The end result will be a manageable, uncluttered and beautiful landscape that you can enjoy for little to no hassle.

Plant Size

Photo courtesy of Applegate Landscape Co.On a visual level, adding different plant sizes will make your front yard look more appealing. Adding different shapes and colors complements your home and the lawn. On a maintenance level, mixing small and big plants will cut down on clutter in your yard. If you have too many bushy plants, their roots and branches could get mixed together and cause maintenance issues. So plant different trees, shrubs and flowers to make your landscape colorful and varied to add onto your home’s appeal and save on trouble.

Diverse Plants

Lawn Flower CurbingPhoto courtesy of M&M Garden DesignsIntertwined with the plant sizes you choose are how diverse they should be. You don’t want to plant only shrubs and trees with leaves. Vary it up with fruit trees or shrubs that have flowers to add color to the front yard. You also might choose annual and perennial flowers to sprinkle across your yard. You will need to replace annuals every year, but that gives you the chance to try out different flowers. Perennials, on the other hand, will last for many years and can endure harsh winter conditions.

Conclusion

Whether you hire a landscape designer or decide to tackle the front yard landscape yourself, be sure to include these three elements. Adding them to your front yard will pay back dividends in your home resale value, and it will make your home more attractive to buyers.
